Interview with Richard L. Harwood, April 22, 1980
Project: John Sherman Cooper Oral History Project
Interview Summary
Harwood begins the interview by sharing his initial impressions of John Sherman Cooper. Harwood recalls Cooper and Thruston Morton running as a team in 1956. Cooper projected a non-partisan image, while Morton was very much a Republican party candidate. Cooper was truly a national senator who could get beyond the regional issues that concerned only Kentucky. Cooper was considered a liberal for his progressive stand on civil rights issues. Cooper was often frustrated with the Republican party's positions. Harwood also discusses Cooper's work on the Warren Commission and the Vietnam War.Interview Accession
